Evolution of Artificial Intelligence

What was just a piece of imagination and used in science fiction movies once, artificial intelligence (AI) is taking a crucial part in our day to day lives. We’re still quite away from having robots at our office and daily help, but AI has still managed to have a profound impact in more moderate ways. Weather forecasts, Google’s search, Apple’s Siri, and voice recognition are all the artificial intelligence examples present in today’s world. All these technologies work on the machine learning algorithms that enable them to work in real time. There will be numerous disadvantages, but the positive effect it will have on society in terms of efficiency and ease of living is immeasurable.

AI isn’t a brand new concept; its roots go as far back as the Greek civilization. However, it was less than a century ago that technology started advancing and AI started becoming a reality from a mere fiction. Alan Turing, the British mathematician who broke the WW2 code and was the first one to give the idea of machines that can think. Though his idea was ridiculed at that time it still set a lot of things in motion and artificial intelligence gained popularity.

American scientist Marvin Minsky co-founded the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s AI laboratory in 1959. But it took some time for people to recognize the true power of AI. High-profile investors and innovative thinkers, like Elon Musk, founder of Tesla, and Stephen Hawking, are continuing the conversation about the potential and spectrum for AI technology. While this conversation about the potentials of AI occasionally turns into a doomsday because of its threat to the very own human existence and human intelligence.

The very strong premise of the AI is to learn from the data it collects. The more data there is to collect, the better the learning of the AI and faster and better predictions. AI has created a great impact in industries than anywhere else. Machine learning technologies are increasing productivity in the office as never seen before. From workflow management to trend predictions, AI is changing the way we used to work in offices. In fact, recently a Japanese venture capital nominated an AI to its board member for its ability to predict markets future faster than humans.

Upcoming technologies like big data are a great field for AI to be implemented. AI can collect and organize massive amounts of data to make predictions and analysis that are far beyond the capabilities of manual processing. Not only does it increase the efficiency of an organization but it also reduces the chance of any critical mistake to be made. There is so much potential for AI that there is hard to imagine a future without it and the best way forward is for humans and machines to live productively, learning on one another’s strengths.
